Most students at BMS begin band in
the 6th grade. At the beginning of the school year, the student
spend a few weeks learning musical concepts through the use of
recorders and song flutes. Also, during this time, each student is
tested on various instruments to decide which instrument works best
for that student. At this point, instrument rental meetings are
held at the school for the parents to come and secure an instrument
for the student. The students spend the rest of the school year
becoming acclimated to their instruments, learning to read and
perform music, produce good tone quality, and learn all proper
playing techniques for their particular instrument. By the end of
the year, the students are ready for 7th grade band.
Symphonic Band and Concert Band
During Large
Group Performance Evaluation season, we will have a mixed grade
Symphonic Band and Concert Band. The Symphonic Band is comprised
mostly of the top 8th grade players in the band and will also have a
few outstanding 7th grade band members. The Symphonic Band will
perform a straight Level Three program at Performance Evaluations
this year. The Concert Band will consist mostly of 7th grade
students and will also have some 8th grade students as well. The
Concert Band will perform a straight Level Two program at Large
Group Performance Evaluations this year.
Jazz Band
The Jazz Band is a very important
part of the BMS Band Program. Widely recognized as an extremely
talented middle school ensemble, the Jazz Band has performed at
several events places over the years such as, the State Capital, the
Georgia National Fair, and the Georgia Music Educators Association
In-Service Conference. This year, the Jazz Band has been invited to
perform at the opening ceremonies for the Georgia National Fair.
Football Band
The Football Band is very popular
among the students, parents, and faculty at Bonaire Middle School.
Performing a wide variety of music from the Rolling Stones to Blink
182, the Football Band performs at all BMS football games and all
pep rallies. In May, the Football Band will perform at Universal
Studios, Florida for the 8th grade band trip.
Chamber Ensembles
For the 2007-2008 school year, Mrs.
Wilson and Mrs. Fraser will be starting a chamber music program.
This will give the band program new and exciting opportunities for
performing. Chamber ensembles are smaller groups such as, flute and
clarinet choirs, brass choirs, and percussion ensembles. These
kinds of groups are excellent for reinforcing listening and
intonation because they are in a smaller setting, plus they will
give the band more opportunities to get out into the community.
